Technical Theatre: Costume and Wardrobe Level 3

Qualification Overview: EDI, in conjunction with Creative and Cultural Skills, has developed a comprehensive range of Creative and Cultural qualifications reflecting the diversity of job roles in the sector.

The Technical Theatre (Costume and Wardrobe) awards will introduce people to working backstage in a theatre or live event setting and provide a basis for careers in the costume and wardrobe aspect of theatre production. Learners will gain real experience of working as part of a wardrobe team, seeing a production wardrobe through from initial idea, through development to final costume production. They will develop skills in specific aspects of costume and wardrobe production such as discussing artists’ requirements, pattern cutting, fitting and altering costumes and dressing performers, thereby gaining a thorough understanding of the overall production process.

To achieve the full National Award in Technical Theatre (Costume and Wardrobe), you are require to complete all eight of the units at Level 3

Mandatory Core (8 Units)

Unit 1 Cleaning up own work area

  • Element 1.1 Cleaning and clearing techniques
  • Element 1.2 Material storage techniques
  • Element 1.3 Safe disposal techniques

Unit 2 Drafting patterns for costumes

  • Element 2.1 Pattern drafting skills
  • Element 2.2 Marking up and cutting skills
  • Element 2.3 Techniques for obtaining information about performers

Unit 3 Fitting and altering costumes and accessories

  • Element 3.1 Alteration techniques
  • Element 3.2 Costume fitting skills

Unit 4 Developing and researching ideas for a production

  • Element 4.1 Information Management skills
  • Element 4.2 Negotiation techniques
  • Element 4.3 People skills

Unit 5 Organising the wardrobe

  • Element 5.1 Packing techniques for getting in and getting out
  • Element 5.2 Costume storage techniques
  • Element 5.3 Costume preparation for techniques for performance
  • Element 5.4 Performer dressing skills

Unit 6 Planning costume requirements for a production

  • Element 6.1 Techniques for establishing costumes requirements
  • Element 6.2 Planning skills for costume construction
  • Element 6.3 Planning skills for the running wardrobe
  • Element 6.4 Techniques for obtaining performer information
  • Element 6.5 Budget management skills

Unit 7 Sourcing costumes, materials and equipment

Unit 8 Making and finishing costumes

  • Element 8.1 Costume dyeing, aging and distressing techniques
  • Element 8.2 Costume construction and finishing skills

Costume and Wardrobe Level 2

To achieve the full National Award in Technical Theatre (Costume and Wardrobe), you are require to complete all seven of the units at Level 2.
